Oh, Carlisle.

Americans have this preconceived notion that our government’s aggressive policy towards the ethnicity and culture of non-Anglo races began to fade out at the turn of the 20th century.  In reality, institutions such as the Carlisle Indian School were founded only a few years prior to, or directly after the turn of the century and continued well into the 1950’s.  In fact, here’s a fun fact for you:

Native Americans did not gain the right to “gather” and/or hold any religious ceremonies until 1978.

That’s a little past the 20th century mark, don’t you think?
